Who I Follow

I have openly stuck up for “New Girl” before

but this last episode started to veer back into “Ladies are like this, dudes are like this” territory. I have a soft spot for sitcoms, but they so often do this weird thing where they have the capacity for serious human insight, but they also have a tendency to flatten and reduce characters to their top 3 most popular characteristics after a while.

I’m totally dadding on sitcoms. They have so much potential! I’m not mad, just disappointed!

New Girl won me over after the pilot. I thought it would be lame and boring and not fun, but it turned into something with heart. Now it’s just kind of becoming lame again? I like the characters now, I like the theme song, I like the whole shebang. But if it keeps being very generic, it’s going to go to a bad place. It’s going to go to the regular sitcom space, which can be good when done right…but I don’t know if Zooey Deschanel’s quirkiness would work there.
